We stand with Black people everywhere. Racism exists in science and needs action to eradicate it. #BlackLivesMatter We commit to doing more to make chemistry more equal and accessible for black people, and all people.

Black female scientist explains experiencing racism in academia is isolating. White male scientist undermines her experience and says he shows solidarity. The same white male scientist called a different Black female scientist ghetto. Self identified allies are problematic.

The comments in this paper Angewandte Chemie are not isolated thoughts. Most minority students and faculty recognize that when they are hired, there is an asterisk by their name. That they are automatically assumed to be less competent and less deserving than their white colleagues.

I am #BlackInSTEM, and I honestly don't know what #ShutDownSTEM and this one day of self-reflection is supposed to accomplish. I've been reflecting for 20 years. It's not that hard. Let us publish in top journals. Nominate us for awards. Invite us to speak at conferences.

During this week of #BlackInChem, I want to highlight my student, Kori Kori McDonald. She's doing great work in developing thin film oxide coatings to inhibit photocorrosion on chalcogenides.
