Really excited to see our paper in British Journal of Anaesthesia reporting critical care use after major GI + liver surgery from the STARSurg DISCOVER project! Collaborative and student-driven from conception -> data collection -> writing at the STARSurg #hackday.

Nick Ferrari: "I don't know how you're going to get out of this one but it's going to be fun" It's quite rare to see Michael Gove realise mid-lie how ridiculous he sounds and backtrack but here it is x.com/BenTheTim/stat…

“Details and Complications” is what define great surgeons. Great surgeons pay attention to details to prevent complications. And when complications occur they don’t ignore them, they pay attention to details to make the complications better.

CRP was discovered when precipitation was observed in the plasma of patients with Pneumococcal PNA which decreased as patients recovered. They later uncovered that some protein had reacted with the C-polysaccharide of Pneumococcus and christened it C Reactive Protein. (5/12)

It's been 10 years since I got my PhD. So I few scattered reflections on things I've come to realise over the years, which I hope might be useful to others starting out...

This is a letter Feynman wrote to a former student who wrote congratulating him for the Nobel. I’ve posted it before but I really find it worth it to read especially as a student or early stage research person.

Thank you to Jackie Baillie who lodged a motion in Scottish Parliament welcoming a new London Economics, LE report which shows cancer research in Glasgow is worth more than half a billion pounds to the UK economy, bringing benefits to patients & boosting the region's life sciences ecosystem 🔬

Really interesting paper in Nature Immunology today (Broquet et al.) They found that people who recover from sepsis have a reduced cancer risk in the years that follow (vs. matched people with non-septic infections): This was recapitulated in a controlled setting in mice - mice

Ecstatic and proud to share the NICHE-2 results, now published in NEJM. Out of 111 pts, 95% had an MPR , and 68% a pCR after only 4 weeks of #neoadjuvant #immunotherapy. Grateful to the pts and colleagues who made this possible. John Haanen nej.md/3Ku4X0H

And doctors, please remember to see/hear/speak to the caregiver, as well. The cancer patient faces the possibility of pain, disability, death. The caregiver faces the possibility of going through life with only half their heart. They both need you. ❤️
