An excellent point by Mark Sanderson on whether judgements by judges line up with those by users. How the document is presented in the search result list is important. If the judges evaluate whole documents, but users only see snippets, then we are not comparing results 1:1.#sigir2020

#sigir2020 Mark Sanderson is unaware of negative impacts by search engines on society, but recommender systems have had a much more mixed impact on society. An interesting future area of research would be to evaluate systems based on this impact.

Very interesting (and underexplored) research area noted by Mark Sanderson: lots of effort goes into evaluating results for *a user* but what about evaluation approaches to show how results affect people in aggregate (societal impacts)? #sigir2020

Alas, I wish @IR_oldiehad time to cover bias in recommenders. Great talk, really interesting insights into gaps/areas for future exploration. #sigir2020

Next year's SIGIR 2025 is now soliciting submissions for a pilot "perspectives" track. Submissions should make a well-supported argument for an area of research that deserves more attention by the SIGIR community. 1/4
