35 years ago today, Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso, was assassinated in a French-backed coup. He aspired to an egalitarian, feminist society, and an economy built on self-sufficiency, ecological regeneration, and independence from Western powers.

The security forces in Iran have killed at least 23 children. Remember their names.

Beginning in October 1965, the US collaborated in a coup that deposed Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, and installed a right-wing dictatorship. US and British officials conspired with the dictatorship to destroy the socialist movement, massacring up to a million people.

The anti-colonial revolutionary Che Guevara was captured and executed by a CIA-assisted mission in Bolivia on October 9, 1967. They cut off his hands and appropriated several of his personal belongings, which were kept as trophies by the CIA.

Samora Machel helped lead Mozambique's anti-colonial struggle, and became the first president. In 1986 he was killed in a plane crash with suspected involvement of the apartheid regime in South Africa, which worked to crush socialist & Pan-Africanist movements across the region.

There's also Ibrahim Al-Hamdi, president of North Yemen. He sought to implement egalitarian reforms and became popular for his socialist development policies. He was assassinated on October 11, 1977, with Saudi and possibly also US support, but the latter is not confirmed.

Today Congo remembers her most famous son and one of her most influential politicians: Patrice Emery Lumumba, Congo’s first prime minister, who was assassinated on January 17, 1961 in Katanga, his body dissolved in sulfuric acid. His spirit looms large in Congo politics.

This week in 1961, US, British and Belgian forces couped and assassinated Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Republic of Congo, because he sought to restore national control over the country's mineral wealth. Remember Lumumba.
