I wonder why scientific fields, including psychology, revisit and 'rediscover' certain topics over time, basically ignoring prior work.

We can just be cynical and say people don't read enough or are purposely selling old wine in new bottles.

But I don't think that's it. 1/2

One of the greatest findings of 20th century anthropology is that social structures shape psychological structures, and one of the greatest failings of modern psychology is to have almost entirely ignored this.

'Mental illness' doesn't cost England £300bn a year (as this article/study claims), but the harmful effects of living with adverse circumstances. So the solution isn't funding more medicalised interventions but identifying & addressing those circumstances.

Nature is a surprisingly effective drug. The link between time in 🌳and physical & mental health has been shown in multiple studies & controlled experiments.

No one knows all of the mechanisms of action, but 90 minutes a week seems a good dose. In cities, parks seem to work

Real world debates are not about 'foundations' of liberty or fairness.

They are about *victims*--who is most vulnerable to mistreatment. Cops? Black people? Fetuses?

8 studies show moral debates are explained by diff 'assumptions of vulnerability' (AoVs) btw libs and cons.

Social media use is linked to social anxiety (r=.14), according to a meta-analysis of 27 studies (N = 38,163)

The link is stronger in studies with greater age and racial diversity, that include global data & more reliable measures of social media use

With successful pilot after successful pilot, why is the notion of Universal Basic Income still met with skepticism? It's not a handout; it's a launch pad. Imagine a society where the fear of failure isn't a barrier to trying new ideas. That's not utopia; that's a smart economy.
