Pleased to share out our new commentary in EdSource about how the labeling of unexcused absences can deepen inequities. See our original PACE report here: edpolicyinca.org/sites/default/… Disparities in 'unexcused' absences deepen education inequities edsource.org/?page_id=688849

Check out my take on #LCFF in EdSource. CliffsNotes version: + Turned conceptual commitments into $$ that flowed to underserved students. + Boon in data to reveal inequities that were hidden. - Need to incorporate students w/ disabilities into the funding formula.

Thrilled to share news of my promotion to full professor! Even more meaningful to be the first and only #AAPI male faculty in our school at this rank. Would not have been possible without the support and inspiration from my family, friends, colleagues, collaborators and mentors.

Our new pub in #ECRQ. What drives disparities in absenteeism between kindergarteners w/ vs. w/o disabilities? Our decomposition models show: (1) approaches to learning and (2) internalizing behaviors drives much of the disparity. @magottfried Jennifer Freeman sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

New work w/ colleagues UC Davis Health in JournalofPediatrics on health-related correlates of absenteeism. Our key finding: California teens who used co-used tobacco & cannabis have higher odds of absenteeism (3+ days) vs. tobacco users only as well as non-users. jpeds.com/article/S0022-…

New today: Report on bullying of California's AAPI youth using unique disaggregated data. Treating AAPIs as a monolith masks important trends. We find higher rates for Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and NHPI youth. Thanks to AAPI Data for the generous support. education.ucdavis.edu/sites/main/fil…

What did hate speech against Asian American teens look like pre-pandemic? Our new study shows: 7% were targets of hate-speech from '15-'19, with stable rates; positive school climate relates to lower hate speech incidents. #StopAAPIHate doi.org/10.1007/s10964…

New work w/ UC Davis Health re: teens & flavored tobacco in CA. Policies restricting access only affected areas w/ fewer tobacco retailers. Minoritized youth are surrounded by more retailers so despite restrictions, face ongoing exposure to e-cig access. academic.oup.com/ntr/article/26…
