I'd really appreciate it we stopped calling these Confined Animal Feeding Operations "family farms". This one houses 6,220 hogs. Also, the jobs you can expect in industrial livestock production ARE very dangerous. Yet we have children working there.

A few albums my creative writing students at BSU would choose as their one deserted-island album: "Can't buy a thrill" by Steely Dan "Mellon Collie..." by Smashing Pumpkins "Sgt Pepper's..." by the Beatles The kids are all right.

This story is 🍌🍌. A lab authorized by USDA to test milk for bird flu “insisted on calling each of the 4 farms first for permission, though the […] agency doesn't require permission from farms”. Farms say no, lab doesn’t test. Farmers’ feefees first! npr.org/2024/05/15/125…

Drake They get really defensive when you point out the empty calories, 60+% of the US diet comes from ultra processed foods, there are 100 million pre diabetics in US, and it does start with subsidized planting decisions to feed Big Ag’s insatiable demand for “cheap” food.

My back of the envelope calculation is about 75 times more miles per acre. About 10,000 miles per acre with ethanol and internal combustion engine per year. About 750,000 miles per acre with solar and electric vehicle per year. Both highly subsidized guaranteed market.

Here’s to the families covered in mosquito and chigger bites. Grass-stained and sun-bleached. It’s best for our insides to be outside. The cost of anti-itch cream is a small price to pay.

This story about a conflict between a small farmer and an animal sanctuary is wild (link in comments): “…the case of the wandering cows has inspired death threats…rowdy protests and Joaquin Phoenix, stolen chickens… and a court battle featuring a rotating cast of lawyers…”

Everyone should at least attend slaughter once. They may eat less meat but they would respect it more. Our society takes it for granted that meat ends up in the store in plastic wrap. We have visitors to our kill floor all the time!
