no language or variety of language is ‘broken’ or ‘substandard’. but schools are designed to make children think that they are, and teachers are positioned to reinforce that ideology.

In plainer speech: don’t be that guy.

If you don’t understand language or speakers, either take steps to understand them or accept that maybe they aren’t talking to you.

Learn to share the linguistic landscape. It belongs to everyone. Not just Proper English.

Anna Mills, annamillsoer.bsky.social, she/her Marc Watkins (marcwatkins.bsky.social) My concern is not accuracy but care. Handing scoring to AI indicates teachers aren't interested in understanding student learning needs, just measuring outcomes. That devalues teaching as a caring profession. It also encourages students to game the system.

It is also colonial because Saint Paul of Thesaurus shows how little he knows or cares about the evolution and use of English in all the countries forcibly invaded by Britain, whose languages were destroyed and who now still use English as their national language.

He wrote someone off because they used delve in an email. Yet in the same country he lives in, we have to write extra tests to prove our proficiency in a language we were forced to learn better than others and constantly forced to prove we know well.

There's a new press release from Turnitin making big claims about their AI detector. They've scanned over 200 million papers with it over the past year.

A 4% false positive rate, their current claim, means 8 million wrong results. That's a lot of harm.

In EdSurge, I try to pt out that tools aren’t good or bad, it’s how they’re used & if they’re used transparently. Also a note that institutional polices & procedures, not detection tools, dictate how potential AI violations are addressed. edsurge.com/news/2024-04-0…

Thanks Tim Fawns for the opportunity to discuss this - it was great talking to you! (The early morning start due to the time difference is to blame for my rambling lost trains of thought… 😅)
