Police threatened to arrest the couple’s son if he advocates for their release.

Their son's mental health has seriously deteriorated, he is suffering from depression.

Yu and Xu were arrested for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” and “inciting subversion of state power'.

Xu Yan has reportedly lost 14kg since being detained, after being subjected to what may amount to torture and other ill-treatment.
