Chinese human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng and his wife, the activst Xu Yan, were arrested in Beijing exactly one year ago while en route to the EU delegation to China. Amnesty joins 29 other human rights groups in calling for the couple's immediate release. amn.st/6014wQa2K

On this painful anniversary, Amnesty International & 27 other civil society organizations urge the Chinese government to:

👉Immediately and unconditionally release Yu Wensheng and Xu Yan

👉Ensure they are not subjected to torture and other ill-treatment while in detention

Police threatened to arrest the couple’s son if he advocates for their release.

Their son's mental health has seriously deteriorated, he is suffering from depression.

Yu and Xu were arrested for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” and “inciting subversion of state power'.

Xu Yan has reportedly lost 14kg since being detained, after being subjected to what may amount to torture and other ill-treatment.
