We Amnesty International spent yesterday visiting the Assad government’s security and intelligence branches in Damascus. For years, survivors had described the horrors they experienced in these underground dungeons. But nothing could have prepared us for what we saw.

Only a fraction of the 100,000+ missing have been released across Syria since Assad’s fall. Families are scouring hospitals & prisons for any clue - docs, bodies, inscriptions on walls - desperately trying to piece together what happened. (Families asked us to share these photos)

Today, Amnesty International visited 2 mass graves on the outskirts of Damascus, where it seems the Assad government dumped the bodies of detainees from various detention facilities & prisons, incl Saydnaya. Those detainees had either been executed or died from torture/conditions of detention

Former prison guards and detainees from Saydnaya had described to Amnesty International the location of one of these mass graves and said that families are not informed of the deaths nor given the remains of their loved ones. The smell of dead bodies permeated the air.

In the other location, we found bags containing human remains, labeled with the names of the detainees and their “prisoner number”.
