The Renters Reform Bill (UK) will not go far enough to protect those who claim benefits, such as Universal Credit, from discrimination. Under the current system, rental agencies are not 'lawfully' allowed to descriminate, but they do, it's commonplace.

The Equality Act 2010 places a duty on all businesses to not descriminate against those whom fall under any of the nine protected characteristics. Rental agencies who do not offer the same opportunities to those claiming benefits are breaking the law as ...

...they exclude a large portion of single mothers (sex) and those claiming Personal Independence Payment (disability). Sex and Disability are two of the nine protected characteristics.

If you are claiming benefits and struggling with descrimination, I would suggest the following. Make an application declaring benefits. If you experience descrimination, make an application without the declaration using different contact details. Make sure all....

.... conversations are recorded and confirmed in writing. This will then be your evidence to take to Trading Standards and your local MP. Rental Agencies should not be able to ask if your income is subsidised by benefits. They just need to know if you can afford it or not.
