"As educators and parents, we have a real opportunity to shift the paradigm around what assessment for learning looks like." via @mssackstein mssackstein.com/post/assess-wi…

Countdown to the kickoff of the Vision25 Summit! Excited to join fellow educators across our division as we examine our assessment practices to make sure they are learner-centered and focused on student growth!! #EmpowerFCPS #fcpsva #V25FCPSAssessment

#EmpowerFCPS A balanced assessment gives teachers a better caption of student mastery. Begin with small steps to produce big gains!

#V25FCPSAssessment we are going to rock the socks off of assessment today and produce a product that is learner-centered so that students know their strengths and growth areas and have the feedback to GROW! #EmpowerFCPS #allaboutthatgrowth

Standardized Tests (including growth assessments) account for 46 of the 2,340 days students are in school from K-12, yet so many decisions are based off of those 46 days…balance the system! Make everyday count! #EmpowerFCPS #V25FCPSAssessment

Are traditional final exams really necessary? If students showed evidence of mastery earlier in the semester, why should they have to show it again?

Tomorrow's one of my favorite activities to help students think more critically about concepts: hexagonal thinking. I like to turn it into a bit of a game at first to help them be more willing to stretch their thinking. 🧵 with info and resources. 1/

Last week Bill Gates said, "Artificial intelligence is as revolutionary as mobile phones and the Internet." Here are 9 other gems from his memo "The Age of AI has begun" and how it will change life as we know it:

Running through my workshop for tomorrow, and this slide stuck with me. How often are we trying to convince students to do what we want them to do via "engagement" (which is fine) when we could be opening doors to allow them to pursue the content in ways that matter to them?

When students use AI to complete an assignment, they are simply taking the fastest route to the goal. The problem is that we've conditioned students that the goal of school is to get good grades, not to learn. If the goal is to learn, it gets much harder to "cheat" with AI.

One of the biggest changes that I noticed when we de-emphasize grading in the classroom and look for new ways to approach assessment is that students were more willing to take risks, and as a result, students created more interesting projects and writing.
