2/ Open source worked the way it's supposed to. Some hacker noticed something that made him curious, poked at it because hackers are like that, and because the code was open and availablwe for inpection, diagnosed the problem before any serious harm was done.

And now we have the answer to this: although it was not discovered during the last December-January break, this time the main incident of the year is the xz backdoor

So here's a story of, by far, the weirdest bug I've encountered in my CS career. Along with Maciej Wołczyk we've been training a neural network that learns how to play NetHack, an old roguelike game, that looks like in the screenshot. Recenlty, something unexpected happened.

I'm glad to share that our paper, "Evaluating SZZ Implementations: An Empirical Study on the Linux Kernel," has been accepted at IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering.
