Let’s learn about wheat in May! Wheat is a grain that produces a dry, edible seed called a kernel that is used mostly for human consumption. There are about 50 kernels in a head of wheat & 12,000 to 14,000 kernels in a pound. #agintheclassroom

Thousands of varieties of wheat fall into 6 categories: hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, hard white, soft white and durum. Most of the wheat grown in Illinois is soft red winter, used to make cereal, cakes, cookies and pretzels. #agintheclassroom

As students go back to school, it's time to thank a farmer! Illinois farmers provide the soy biodiesel in the school bus, the ethanol blend for the parents' vehicles, wheat is used in cookies, specialty growers provide apples, and dairy farmers provide 1000s of 1/2 pints of milk.
