Here's the ~1970s postcard view of the 1st hole of Kameruka versus present day. Everything still there in the ground waiting to be restored!

The Kameruka golf course is believed to be the oldest remaining example of penal golf architecture in Australia and was constructed by Ernest Banks. This aerial photo from 2014 shows not much has changed from the original as built drawing in our previous tweet. #kamerukagolf

The historic Kameruka golf course scorecard measured in yards. Note holes 1 to 7 are named after WWI battlegrounds. Kameruka has a strong connection with WWI as many families from the local community suffered tragic loss of life from those that served at war. #kamerukagolfcourse

The Honor Roll in the Community Hall on the Kameruka Estate of those who served during WWI. It is quite sobering that all of these people came from this tight knit community which in 1914 had a population of only about 350. Not all on this Roll would return home. #kamerukagolf

This photo (circa 1920’s) is looking up the 4th hole towards the green. The foreground shows examples of penal architecture that construction supervisor Ernest Banks built into the 4th hole with cross hazards of mounds and a bunker. These are still on the ground today. #kameruka

Kameruka is connected to the tragedies of World War 1. This is the main war memorial. Inscribed on this monument located along the entrance road to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church at the Kameruka Estate: “WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR”

An advertisement from the early 1920s for the Kameruka Hostel which was also a social centre of the estate and offered accommodation in the early 1900’s. It was used as a hospital for the Spanish flu outbreak in 1919. The building was demolished in 1927. #kameruka #historicgolf

This recent photo of the golf course taken from the Southwest corner of the property looking East, shows the 4th and 5th holes named Shrapnel Gully & Hill 60 respectively. Both holes are measured at 307yds with geography akin to both of their WWI battleground namesakes. #Kameruka

Another piece of architectural history of the Kameruka Estate is the distinctive clock tower. It was built in 1911 only a few years before the golf course would be built. It was in keeping with the nature of Kameruka as an English village for the workers on the Kameruka Estate.

This is a recent aerial photograph of the 1st green at Kameruka. Originally there were bunkers left and right on approach and a man made drainage channel which can be seen running parallel to the hole down the right. You can also see the remains of the left bunker.

Hole 7 was named The Labryinth owing to its numerous bunkers surrounding the green of this relatively short par 3 that backs onto the Candelo Creek. Six bunkers encircle the putting surface which you can still make out in this photo. Your stoke from the tee must be perfect.
