60 years ago today, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” debuted on television. Setting the standard for Christmas specials in general as well as animated adaptations of comic strips, it managed to do everything right…by somehow doing everything wrong.

Comic strip humor is different from cartoon humor and even sitcom humor. It shouldn’t work in animation, yet somehow becoming animated characters are what has cemented the Peanuts characters as icons even more than the already monumental success the strip had gained by 1965.

It’s impossible to imagine Snoopy nowadays without imagining him making comedic mumbles in the voice of Bill Melendez while being accompanied by a Vince Guaraldi soundtrack.

Charles Schulz stuck to his guns despite being told none of what he wanted would work in an animated cartoon, and in the end his decisions were proven to have worked. As Charlie Brown himself once said of his baseball team, “How can we lose when we’re so sincere?”
