The lifetime risk for colorectal cancer for individuals with no risk factors is 4.1% for women and 4.4% for men. These individuals should have colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 45 (or another screening test as I tweeted about yesterday). #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth

People who have a parent/sibling/child with CRC are 2-4 times more likely to develop CRC than those without family history. They need to start colonoscopy at age 40 (or 10 yr earlier than their relative's age at dx) and repeat it every 5 years. #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth

Colorectal cancer is the second deadliest cancer in the U.S., but barely a third of all people who should get a colonoscopy get one. The key to stopping it is catching it early. Get screened sooner rather than later. bit.ly/3JIPOb1 #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP): >100 adenomas Usually requires colectomy to prevent CRC Attenuated FAP: 30-100 adenomas Can sometimes be managed w/frequent colonoscopy Caused by mutations in the APC gene 25% of APC mutations are de novo #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth

It’s #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth! The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is by having colonoscopies, which are recommended every 10 years for those ≥45 y.o. However, earlier or more frequent colonoscopies may be recommended based on your personal/family history.
