Regardless the intention, introducing abuse and mistrust of a critical emergency communication system during a pandemic does not improve State ESF 8 or overall response. The implications of which could have been catastrophic had the message been sent to the public.

Worth knowing: 1. Arctic summer sea ice will be gone by 2035 give or take 14 years 2. We can expect +2C of global warming just from greenhouse gas emissions that have already occurred 3. With no emergency system change we face the horrors of a sudden shift to +2C by the 2030s

285 US weather and climate disasters totaling nearly 1.9 trillion dollars in the last 40 years... the record breaking consequences of climate change are real AND the need to include disaster management in climate change conversations and adaptation has never been more evident. ⚠️

Confused about the #PolarVortex? Usually a strong jet stream confines Arctic air to the north, stabilized by a big difference in temperature between low and high latitudes. The smaller the difference in temperature, the more the wind belts meander (Via @RemoteLongitude & NOAA)

Multi-layered response to overlapping disasters is the reality of climate change - posing dangerous interactions, straining response resources, and further indicating a need for strong policy support.

Globally, climate extremes & weather-related hazards may lead to more than 200 million people in need of humanitarian aid by 2050. Acting now is a moral imperative. #ClimateEmergency

Disabled and medically vulnerable populations are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis & disasters. Multi-level preparations and contingencies for this population must be a key aspect of emergency management planning and mitigation efforts 👏

Getting the evacuation message out is important. However, it's important to remember that there are MANY valid reasons that people don't (and can't). Be careful not to shame and blame those whose circumstances are different than yours. It puts more lives at risk.

Speaking as an IPCC Lead Author, these are some of the most important new messages from the #climate report out today: (🧵) 1. For the first time we’re seeing evidence of real, sustained decreases in greenhouse gas emissions from some countries. But take a breath because…
