Hello, I'll be with Douglas Kelly on Clubhouse later for more informal musings on web accessibility, drop in and share a story, or just listen in joinclubhouse.com/event/xjbeXZKX

Digital accessibility is about solid foundations and coding to standards. It's about attention to detail and "taking the long(er) way home" ... although actually, it's usually a shortcut ! (native html elements are free and now).

#axschat hi everyone, John here. Thanks Neil for having me on the axschat which was thouroughly enjoyable ; i have parallel meetings going on right but have scheduled some input to the discussion and will be checking my phone surreptitiously to join in when possible !

#axschat quotas are good when the obstacle is the organization's own inertia ; it's important to remember that in this case the quota simply redresses an imbalance that is needlessly technologically maintained.

#axschat lin such situations fixing the whole problem is not always in the interests of all parties ; we need to remember the ultimate aim and not get identified with the intermediate steps ; there is plenty of work to be done in maintaining 6% so no reason not to aim for it

#axschat it's important to demystify and present a quantitative analysis to decision makers ; it's not the whole story, but it's the part of the story that our world is (unfortunately, sometimes) fixated upon. Far better than ad holc descriptions.

#axschat our job, as accessibility specialists, is to make sure that the message gets through so that whatever skillset such folks might develop, the tools they will be using to do their work WILL work for them from the outset. This is universal design, being prepared for all.

#axschat i wonder if this is not simply the downside of the politicization accessibility under the inclusion umbrella. A11Y is basically a quality no-brainer : random accessibility blocks are just poor design. Sad that they be part of a culture war!

some environments can become too toxic to use effectively ... but I don't know what the future will bring for twitter. Admittedly I have averaged about 25 tweets a year for the last 14 years ... so I am hardly an avid user. Thanks #axschat for making me reflect on this
