Prison reform does not mean building more prisons. Instead, it means policy reform. Advocates have advised changes like repealing the Habitual Felony Offender Act and revising our harsh drug sentencing laws. Instead, Governor Kay Ivey chose to invest in buildings. #NoNewPrisons

On Thursday, Alabama plans to execute Willie Smith. He was convicted in a terrible murder, but got death after first turning down a plea deal for life. The jury voted 10-2 for death. Fed law & every death penalty state EXCEPT Alabama requires unanimous jury for a death sentence.

The Alabama Legislature is debating whether to repeal one of the harshest sentencing laws in the nation: The Habitual Felony Offender Act. Our State's three strikes law incarcerates Alabamians for decades. Tell your legislators and tell them to repeal this racist and cruel law.

Alabama Appleseed released "Condemned," a report on the impact of the HFOA just last week as HB107 moved within the House Judiciary Committee. We encourage everyone to read the harm this law has inflicted on individuals. alabamaappleseed.org/condemned/

The ACLU of Alabama has an action alert that allows us to directly reach out to people on the Judiciary committee. Use that tool here: aclualabama.org/en/legislation…

We’re out here protesting Governor Kay Ivey’s privately owned mega prison plan. One of Auburn’s board of Trustees is connected to prison building company BL Harbert: his cousin Raymond. Gov. Ivey is our board of trustees president. Don’t make us complicit in mass incarceration.

It was an honor to speak and stand alongside so many inspiring activists in Montgomery today. Thank you to all the AL organizations that made this possible! The evil of Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama Department of Corrections will NOT win. #NoNewPrisons

Alabama's prisons are designed to hold 12,388 people. There are 25,920 in ADOC custody today. The answer isn't bigger prisons: it is addressing the fact that Alabama has one of the highest incarceration rates in America, and indeed of any jurisdiction in the world. #alpolitics
