I am much less confused about this ant now than I was this morning, thanks to a lot of great comments (many of which I need to get to)! So, yeah, they're a bilateral gynandromorphic individual, genus polyergus - Amazon ants! I learned a lot of new things today. ๐Ÿ˜„ More pics:

Ummm, nobody told me that Hemipterans produce some kind of egg sac! Look at their red eyes ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ˜ Does anyone know what this is called or which families produce it? Found on a tomato leaf in one of my vacuum samples.

While filming hanging jumping spiders at night, we noticed surprising things happening. Regular phases of curling up their legs and twitching in what seemed like uncontrolled movements. Reminding us a lot of sleeping dogs or cats, we asked: could this be REM sleep? 2/7

Martha, the last passenger pigeon, died on this date in 1914 in the Cincinnati Zoo. Before going extinct, they were described as darkening the skies. Numbering in the billions, it could take hours for a flock to fly overhead.
