You don need to reinvent the wheel, just present it in a new way. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, and creating that connection between you and the listener should take priority over ego.

Records sound worse now because budgets are absurdly low and people are sacrificing skilled labor. There is a lot of pressure on the artist to do this. People have a romance for “vintage sound” because albums used to have budgets which allowed for skilled labor and studio time.
