I would consider this more an outcome of Poverty, rather than a cause. Poverty makes us more vulnerable to extreme beliefs. A similar recent tragic happened last year in Kenya, where 429 people well encouraged to starve to death inoder to meet Jesus, the case of Paul Mackezie.
