New York was named after the Duke of York, who was James Stuart, eventually King James II, King of England. Col. Richard Nicolls took the island of Manhattan from Peter Stuyvesant and the Dutch in 1664, and renamed New Amsterdam after his friend, the Duke. #DidjaKnow
