Today, on Literacy Day, I stand for more than 75% of #Rohingya women who are illiterate. Education is not just a dream; it’s our right. Literacy means safety. It equips us with the knowledge to protect ourselves. We must ensure that every girl has the chance to learn and thrive.

My comment on Pope Francis’s visit to ASEAN #Singapore is a big investor in #Myanmar. “These financial flows contribute to the military’s war crimes and crimes against humanity. Pope Francis should call on #Singapore to halt any financial support that enables military violence

The ‘road’ to human rights recognition and the instruments our sad little world has devised to get there is bumpy, long, poorly maintained, badly signposted and, isn’t really a road at all, more like a general directional sign. Yet every step on this ‘road’ is welcome.

Today, we see all national sign languages of the European Union recognised, but have a significant way yet to go to ensure that deaf signers have equity of participation and outcome in their lives. But symbolism matters too- and this is, I think, a very significant symbol.

Joseph Lo Bianco (@josephlobianco) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Symbolic action is part of practical change, great to see. Milan conference of deaf educators voted to ban use of sign languages, today there is so far still to go for deaf and hard of hearing children’s education rights and opportunities, celebrating progress is always good.
