50 years after running my first marathon (Greensboro to Winston-Salem), I just did my first marathon swim (6 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oakland Bay Bridge).  In the words of a famous Bama grad:  "I'm pretty tired. Think I'll go home now."

My father's WWII service ended right about here, 80 years ago today. He was a sergeant in Patton's 702nd Tank Battalion, riding in a jeep in blackout conditions that crashed head-on into a captured German truck on a pontoon bridge over the Moselle River. Broke his back and legs.
