Just realised it was half a century ago tonight that I saw Dr. Feelgood in concert. Right at the front, elbows on the stage, sweated on by Lee Brilleaux, Wilko's guitar neck flashing over my head! Best 80 pence I ever spent! #DrFeelgood #WilkoJohnson Cheltenham Town Hall
Mind boggling night Tyne Theatre & Opera House last week seeing Chris Hadfield's Journey Into The Cosmos. My favourite quote from the night was that, contrary to popular belief, you CAN'T see the Great Wall of China from space, but you CAN see the M25!
Things you don't expect to see in a farmyard when cycling through Northumberland! Is that the GlasgowSubway that I used to take to work? With a couple of full size coaches parked in the background? Can anyone explain? Darren...JB RAIL EXPRESS Northumbria Cycling
90 years ago today, the Tyne-built RMS Mauretania sailed past Amble en route to the ship breakers yard in Rosyth. The local council sent a telegram "still the finest ship on the sea". The ship replied "Thank you to the last a kindliest port". Historic Ships Network™ North East Heritage Library
It took some finding, because it's a bit off the main track through Blaydon Burn, but this is the entrance to Betsy Pit, which closed in the mid-1950s. The coal seam was just 2'10" high. Imagine spending a 12 hour shift in that. North East Heritage Library Mining Landscapes North East Tweets
After a lot of poring over maps and scrabbling through undergrowth, Blaydon Burn has revealed another of its secrets! This is the remains of the reservoir which supplied water for Blaydon Burn Colliery. Cowen bricks made 300 yards away! North East Heritage Library Alan Hinkes OBE Mining Landscapes
Love this. Look out for the Dainty Dinah Toffee chimney in Chester-le-Street and the view of the market place from the viaduct 12 seconds in. And some great street shots of Newcastle, too. Shop Chester-le-Street Tyne and Wear Transport Flashback
Some of our smaller dales, such as Knarsdale, have the look of a Yorkshire Dale about them. Where thin seams of coal could be found in the limestone, small lime kilns abound. Here's a couple for North East Heritage Library, one from the front, the other a loaders view.
I usually only collect bricks from the North East, but I've made an exception for this one, because it's such an evocative name. You can almost hear the brass band! Mining Landscapes
Further to the accidental "I-never-knew-they-were-from-the-North-East" feature started by Guinevere of Mason, here's another one: Wallsend-born Albert Stubbins, the former Newcastle United and Liverpool FC player, and I THINK the only Geordie on the cover of The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album?
On this day in 2019, Thomas Cook went into administration. We made it home from Corfu days earlier. A year before we'd been with them to Skiathos, and yes, I had to spend a few hours at the airport, although I only had my camera phone! AviationAddiction Airliners.net
Another name from Tyneside's rich industrial heritage has disappeared. Same location, one photo taken a few months ago, one taken yesterday. I just hope the street names on the new housing estate will somehow reflect the site's history. North East Heritage Library North East Tweets
