If you want to watch the eclipse but they run out of glasses, no problem! Talk to the old cryo-EM folks around you. Let's get these babies out of the dusty corners of the lab and give them one more use...What old project did you get for your glasses? Ahmad Jomaa Aida Razi

I am excited to share our new preprint. Human tumor suppressor protein Pdcd4 binds at the mRNA entry site in the 40S, where it blocks the eIF4F-independent role of eIF4A during recruitment and scanning. biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #CryoEM #science #mRNA #ribosome

Angiogenin controls angiogenesis (et plus) by nicking tRNAs. But it’s barely active alone. We discovered how 80S ribosome unlocks Ang’s active site and “brings in” tRNAs. Congrats to Anna Loveland and collab. w/Allan Jacobson! nature.com/articles/s4158…

ncAAs can endow proteins with new activities, but their incorporation efficiencies during translation can be poor. Today in Nature Biotechnology, we report that altering mRNA codon usage can improve incorporation efficiency, yielding proteins with up to 3 ncAAs! nature.com/articles/s4158…
