Last year, I passed a bill to give incarcerated minors the chance to earn a high school diploma. Lonnie just became the first student to graduate under our legislation. Joined by his proud aunt and (even prouder) mom! Policy can change lives.

The justifications of “we didn’t get into teaching to make money” or “remember why you got into teaching” are insulting.

My first principalship in 2015 - a middle school many referred to as “that school” w/“those kids” 😡 We created a safe, nurturing environment and absolutely changed the game. Don’t fall for the “those kids” mess. Build trust. See them. Love them. Empower them and watch em’🚀

As principal it’s important to meet one on one with them. Negativity is just as symptom of a deeper issue. Clear communication with them through care and validation-then expectations of how they will communicate.

Alternative School Realities: Not only are students polarized and profiled but staff personnel as well.

School shooters have a significant thing in common: disconnection. Our alternative school's sole purpose is connection and confidence which brings empathy and purpose to students. The staff I am able to serve with are warriors to that end!

Alternative School Realities: Noone wants to be known as a person who attends one, except the people who work there and the students who attend. Just ask our parents what they think...They love it.
