Our new paper "Novelty is not surprise" is out in PLOS Comp Biol. We (i) give mathematical definitions for novelty and surprise and show they have (ii) separate contributions to behavior and (iii) separate EEG signatures. Excited to see what you think! doi.org/10.1371/journa…

While they disagree on some things, it’s interesting that both Eliezer Yudkowsky ⏹️ and Stephen Wolfram infer broad conclusions from the unquestioned premise that evolution is primarily an optimization algorithm. For Eliezer Yudkowsky ⏹️, a dire succession of probable negative events begins

On the Origin of Risk, initially on Kindle, will present a new way of understanding the deep biases we have in the business and scientific communities in our theories of risk and the core concepts we use to manage risk, especially as organisations. 2/4

Adam Timlett (@joestare) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I will present the evidence and argument from cutting-edge biology that risk is managed differently in organisms in Nature, and that we must learn from Nature in order to develop new theories and lead our mathematics of risk in new directions. 3/4

Adam Timlett (@joestare) 's Twitter Profile Photo

In the final half I sketch out these new directions. I present a new way to look at problems of risk, including a technical appendix adding details on the new mathematics of risk which leverages our latest empirical knowledge of biological systems and my original research.

“It is actually a war of annihilation of the entire Gaza Strip.” In a sobering interview, historian Omer Bartov عومر بَرتوف עמר ברטוב tells me of his recent visit to Israel, his reaction to the IDF saying they only target military targets, and why his view on the question of genocide has now changed.

As a Holocaust Survivor, Israel’s genocide in Gaza is not done in my name. I see echoes of the Holocaust in Gaza today: Dehumanisation, humiliation, large-scale killings, destruction of families and the determination in which they are destroying the whole of Gaza is very

It was a pleasure to work with Rupert Read 🌍 🔥 and Joe Eastoe on this piece for the Climate Majority Project on how it already does, and also can do more, to be inspired by Nature and the science of cutting-edge biology, in how it organises. climatemajorityproject.com/learning-from-…
