OpenAI o1 is trained with RL to “think” before responding via a private chain of thought. The longer it thinks, the better it does on reasoning tasks. This opens up a new dimension for scaling. We’re no longer bottlenecked by pretraining. We can now scale inference compute too.

OpenAI Subbarao Kambhampati (కంభంపాటి సుబ్బారావు) OpenAI's o1 thinks for seconds, but we aim for future versions to think for hours, days, even weeks. Inference costs will be higher, but what cost would you pay for a new cancer drug? For breakthrough batteries? For a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis? AI can be more than chatbots

Thank you Governor Gavin Newsom for vetoing SB-1047 -- your pro-innovation leadership is much appreciated! And to the many people who've been pushing back on SB-1047, a huge thank you as well. Congratulations to all -- we won! 🎉 Looking ahead, lets keep on protecting AI

This is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time. I almost died in June. Had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won. To

All this…… but Jagmeet Singh still has confidence in the Prime Minister. If he doesn’t abandon this government today, there are no words to describe the magnitude of his irresponsibility and incompetence.

Cost-efficiency will be the overarching measure guiding deployment decisions. How much are you willing to pay to solve X? The world is once again going to run out of GPUs.

I don't have too too much to add on top of this earlier post on V3 and I think it applies to R1 too (which is the more recent, thinking equivalent). I will say that Deep Learning has a legendary ravenous appetite for compute, like no other algorithm that has ever been developed

I don’t understand why the Canadian news outlets keep trying to make me care about Mark Carney or Chrystia Freeland’s thoughts. Mark is not in government.

These “OpenAI tokens” are not OpenAI equity. We did not partner with Robinhood, were not involved in this, and do not endorse it.  Any transfer of OpenAI equity requires our approval—we did not approve any transfer. Please be careful.

Software development is undergoing a renaissance in front of our eyes. If you haven't used the tools recently, you likely are underestimating what you're missing. Since December, there's been a step function improvement in what tools like Codex can do. Some great engineers at
