Great presentation from @cammiemcbride at #SSSR2024. She shares frustrations about state-mandated literacy training that has some notable omissions, including a lack of morphology training. She cautions that we can’t take the scientists out of the science of reading.

I really enjoyed hearing Peng Peng, Ph.D. clearly explain his Bayesian network meta-analysis of reading comprehension strategy intervention for struggling readers at #SSSR2024 this morning. AND he has another paper that compliments this one coming out soon.

Its out! Overall students report higher math anxiety on complex math tasks and no differences on overt or covert timed conditions. Students with med/high math anxiety report more math anxiety on complex tasks under covert timing. Katie Maki authors.elsevier.com/c/1jTsN56ZNTYne

All my reading peeps: what is a classic, conceptual paper on word reading that stands the test of time, that you think everyone learning about reading development should read? Not a data paper but a nice, juicy conceptual paper.

Click through for the takeaway thread -- or even better, read the paper! (Open access!) The one that jumped out at me: "the most anxious students are the ones who don't know how to learn."

As the school year gets underway, please know that you very likely have students with dyslexia and DLD in your classes. Here's a recent, open-access article with a great overview of what this means, why it matters, and what to do about it via @TruckTrucks ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/tr…

I just read this. It's great. If you have questions about fitting together all of the pieces of assessment and intervention practices, this is a great read.

Implementation can take time to show positive effects. This interesting Dutch study showed it took two years for positive effects to start to show in literacy outcomes. This is both a challenge, but also a support for school improvement approaches: tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

I get that "helpful for all, harmful for none" is a great tagline, but IT IS JUST NOT TRUE when said about whole-group phonics lessons in GRADE 2... we need to do better, SOR. Who wants to dig into Carol Connor's work... ZOOM BOOK* CLUB ANYONE?! *aka research studies

Just published meta-analysis (open access): Morphology instruction is effective for improving reading and spelling outcomes, and spelling effects can transfer to untrained words – but we still need to learn more about why it works and how best to teach it doi.org/10.1007/s10648…
