Thornborough Henges in North Yorkshire has been reunited 🎉 We’ve acquired the 3rd & final henge meaning that public access across the entirety of this major Neolithic site is guaranteed. It is a remarkable survivor from the prehistoric past & we can’t wait to share its stories.

The 4m tall Pierre du Domaine in Plerguer (Ille-et-Vilaine) was said to stand on the site of a battle between armies. When only one man survived from each army the menhir sprang out of the ground and separated them and they made peace. #FolkloreThursday.

The #Tibblestone marks the boundary of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. It now finds itself on the verge of a Texaco petrol station. Despite its short stature, it was recorded as being over 8ft high when rediscovered. Perfect #urbanprehistory for #StandingStoneSunday!

Here's an #urbanprehistory contender for #tombtuesday. It's the #RomanoBritish Highfield Barrow in Hemel Hempstead, dwarfed by the new town. Unbelievably, in the recent past, cars have been driven over it, and plans submitted to turn it into a skate park, but for now, it's safe.

Secklow #MootMound in #MiltonKeynes, where Anglo Saxons met to talk local issues & serve justice. Today, the law courts, registry office & council buildings surround the mound. People still gather here from across the region, a grassy forerunner of many of our municipal systems.

The lumps and bumps at Grime’s Graves are huge, a really impressive and rare landscape. I’m off to look for a puddingstone which marks the start of a supposed lost trade route from Grimes Graves to Stonehenge proposed by Dr Ernest Rudge. Can I find it? Read on… /1

I don't think I've come across a place that captures so evocatively the memory of the past within the fabric, as the sea of steps at Wells Cathedral.

A classic for #standingstonesunday, the #drytreemenhir at #goonhillydowns in #Cornwall. Satelite dish Arthur looms in the background. Both aligned to the stars. Always listening.

Who is this knight in Wallington church? Is it #JackOLegs, a Hertfordshire giant? Or #Hiccafrith of East Anglian legend, whose name we find today, in Hitchin, River Hiz & Icknield Way. Could it be #Gogmagog from the nearby enigmatic Wandlebury chalk figures? #churchgraffiti

#TombTuesday Bants Carn, #IslesofScilly (2500-800BC) was a stone + earth tomb used for communal burials. It was already ancient when people were living in the nearby Iron Age village.Interestingly, they didn't touch the tomb's stones, respecting the sanctity of this ancient place

Paid respects to the fallen menhir from the intertidal landscape at Greve d'Azette, Jersey. Organic sediments under the sand here are part of the Neolithic light- forest landscape that fringed the coast. Megaliths werent just in the high places. #StandingStoneSunday

This mulberry tree at Castle Ashby has a secret for #FolkloreThursday. An #oldwivestale advises sacrificing a donkey in the ground before planting mulberry trees. Is it an old-fashioned fertiliser method, or is the act itself a residue of a much, much older practice?
