This growing season I want to try and post something every week. Posts will be directed towards sharing with eaters and growers about some of our farming practices that are outside of the the norm for our area. Hoping to encourage learning and dialogue, and growth for the future!

One of our goals is to increase resiliency and diversity. This year instead of 3 or 4 cash crops, we are growing 6. One of these is fall rye. Rye is one of the first plants out of the ground in spring, and has an allelopathic effect on early weeds. Less inputs, and more cover!

Last year we seeded 2/3 of our acres into cover crops after harvest. We do this to protect the soil, feed soil microorganisms, compete with weeds, and where possible add species diversity. Here’s a look at our wheat stubble with canary seed growing last fall, and now in spring.

They say the best fertilizer is a farmers footsteps... This winter I put together a soil health assessment with different indicators so that we can do some monitoring of our own. Thanks to MFGA for the suggestion at a winter workshop! #soilhealth #bootsontheground

Been almost a week since we seeded our first field. It’s been wet, sticky, and slow going. And now I understand the local colloquialism “tiger shit.” Apparently this field felt we needed an extra press wheel.

First real rain of the growing season means some reading, thanks to a recent Acres U.S.A. book order. We’re finished seeding our cereals and onto less competitive crops like canola and beans. Trying to wrap my head around better holistic weed management. Any advice/experience!?

Whoops! Posting has taken a back seat amidst seeding, and spring growing projects. We’ve been done seeding almost a week...where had the time gone!? Working hard to grow more food this year. #pasturedpoultry #pasturedpork #foodforest

Thank you @MPTedFalk for meeting with us last week to talk about the need for Canada to address the impact of the climate crisis on food producers and communities around the world where #foodsecurity is at risk. Happy to be involved with Canadian Foodgrains Bank and meet a fellow supporter!

Thanks Garnett Genuis for the early morning meeting discussing climate resilient food systems on behalf of Canadian Foodgrains Bank. We had a good conversation about increasing #foodsecurity worldwide, and helping communities adapt to the climate crisis.

Thanks James Bezan for meeting this morning to talk about the work of Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and the need to support climate resilient food systems to increase #foodsecurity. I'm impressed the tireless commitment of the MP's I've met with. #MoreAid4Ag

It’s alarming how many people think that electric cars are a solution to climate change. #1 the amount of mining we would need to switch all cars to electric would devastate so many ecosystems. #2 emissions from building roads enormous, pollutes more than the airline industry

ISO carrier recommendations for seeding smaller seeds in an older box drill. Options at this point are potash or some kind of cracked grain. Another local option I have yet to look into is hulled oats from a local mill. #AgTwitter

If you think climate action will hurt the economy: have you noticed what floods, fires, shortages, and devastating heat do?

With harvest starting/imminent it’s time for the annual PSA that you now have an opportunity to manage next years soil water reserve through stubble management. Anything that📈surface roughness will📈snowpack/recharge potential and vice versa #WestCdnAg #snow #hydrology🧵1/7
