I really wish Jonathan Demme was here to see THE BRUTALIST. I keep thinking about how enamored he was by Corbet’s feature debut which we discussed at length when we screened it. He made the following statement about the film which feels especially apt today.

Cue the people who love to complain about contemporary films being shot too dark. It’ll be interesting to see what theaters project this properly or not and then we can look forward to the screenshots of people streaming it in a room with all of the lights on, seeing nothing.

It’s a career full of underrated bangers, the obvious two being AFTER HOURS and BRINGING OUT THE DEAD but I have a, perhaps misplaced, affection for his deft, horror leaning, remake of CAPE FEAR which can also double as De Niro’s most underrated performance.
