I really wish Jonathan Demme was here to see THE BRUTALIST. I keep thinking about how enamored he was by Corbet’s feature debut which we discussed at length when we screened it. He made the following statement about the film which feels especially apt today.

I love and support Criterion regularly but we and our partners do great work too! Glad to see folks taking notice more and more!

Cue the people who love to complain about contemporary films being shot too dark. It’ll be interesting to see what theaters project this properly or not and then we can look forward to the screenshots of people streaming it in a room with all of the lights on, seeing nothing.

All this BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE discourse and not nearly enough of it is focused around Lydia Deetz going to the all night Mario Bava marathon while pregnant and having her water break during KILL BABY KILL — wish we could see her Letterboxd profile

I don’t vibe with most work anniversary stuff but I hit five years at Vinegar Syndrome this week which is the longest I’ve been with any company and has been constantly challenging & rewarding. Looking forward to the next five! Thanks for supporting VS, OCN and Cinématographe!

It’s a career full of underrated bangers, the obvious two being AFTER HOURS and BRINGING OUT THE DEAD but I have a, perhaps misplaced, affection for his deft, horror leaning, remake of CAPE FEAR which can also double as De Niro’s most underrated performance.
