After 32 years at the National Institutes of Health, including as director, Dr Francis Collins retired this year. “It became untenable,” he says. “Restrictions were placed on the research we were trying to do… Staff were being fired with no justification… We were also muzzled.”

Today in The Washington Post we published a portion of the known names of 18,500+ Gazan children killed in the war, in Arabic and English. We could only fit 18% of the names on these 2 pages – it would have taken 5 more pages to list them all:

“In Israel, there is a sea change in the last couple of weeks” in how people view the war in Gaza, says Nimrod Novik, former adviser to Shimon Peres. Media self-censorship is lifting, he tells me, with a feeling that “you cannot really spare Israelis what’s going on in our name”.

Turns out the first Emil Bove-related whistleblower came forward well before his nomination, but the Justice Department's inspector general did... nothing. Some DoJ vets say the ethics watchdog has gone dark in a time of deep turmoil: nytimes.com/2025/07/31/us/…

President Trump “is not really interested in a stable, predictable world order,” says veteran diplomat Richard N. Haass. We’re seeing that world order end, he argues -- but unusually, the country that for decades led it is now the one dismantling it.

This is awful. Reliable economic data is a key strength of the US economy. When Argentina and Greece faked economic data it contributed to major crises. I don't think Trump will be able to fake the data given the procedures. But there is now a risk plus an awful appearance.

More Trump fake-history lying: He just claimed the Bureau of Labor Statistics made the Biden economy look good until post-election, and then in mid-November announced a downward revision of 818K jobs. In reality…that revision was announced months pre-election, in August 2024.

There’s also, obviously, no evidence today’s jobs numbers were rigged to make Trump look bad - just as there’s no evidence the previous BLS numbers he’s touted (see Phil Mattingly’s feed) were rigged to make him look good. But the very specific claim about 2024 is also false.
