For all the new grad students and postdocs out there: "Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen." --John Steinbeck

I got invited to attend the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics ceremony next week in Oslo. (!) It is "black tie or national dress." Dave Charbonneau says I should dress "Californian."

Metal-rich H-dominated atmospheres! A nice plot from Nettelmann, Fortney et al. (2011) that connects "times solar," Z, & the mmw. I find myself looking at this plot a lot. ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2011ApJ...… We only later wrote down the math, in an appendix in 2013: ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2013ApJ...…

Europe in a nutshell at the The Kavli Prize ceremony post-banquet dance in Oslo: American 80s music never ever dies, and the DJ said that Taylor Swift was "too new for people to dance to."

It was great to see Sara Seager again and meet Charles Darrow in Oslo. I've known Sara since I was a grad student and she was a postdoc. She gave me a lot of important advice when I was a young scientist and we've had many interesting science discussions over the years!

It was great to be in Oslo for the Kavli Prize ceremony and see David Charbonneau again! We met when I was a grad student and he was a postdoc. It's been fun being involved in some of his pioneering exoplanet adventures!

My Kepler-86b transmission spectrum program is being observed right now! A nearly 20-hour transit of this 282-day-orbit temperate giant planet! webbtelescope.org/science/the-ob…

The looong transit is over half over now! Soaking up those sweet photons for about 8 more hours! More details on Kepler-86b: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PH2

At School of Earth and Space Exploration we have these cool boards showing the countdown to several space missions. I think we should add one for 339 days from now when I will start as Associate Professor. Keep an eye out for postdoc and grad student job postings. Come join us!
