In a new essay for The Times Of India, I discuss the implications for India of its trade deal w/the US-in terms of US-India, China, strategic autonomy, and myths about India’s trade policy. Ultimately, I argue, New Delhi “showed you don’t need to flatter Trump to get what you want.”

We have been informed that my father, Imran Khan, has lost most of the vision in his right eye, with reports indicating only 15% eyesight remains. This is the direct consequence of 922 days of solitary confinement, medical neglect (denied blood tests) and the deliberate denial of

BREAKING: According to insider sources, the military was trying to use Imran Khan's illness as leverage -- saying that they'd provide him access to healthcare if and only if he makes a deal with them and stays quiet when he is out. Khan has refused this.

“There’s a discussion between Nixon and Kissinger about who [the American emissary to China] should be. And in, sort of, Dick Cheney style, Kissinger nominates himself,” says Jeremi Suri, professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Suri joined James M. Lindsay on The

I'm struck by how many times US military leaders reference Iraq - “twice the air power of shock and awe" --as if that was not an unexpectedly costly and disastrous endeavor, in terms of blood, treasure and American credibility.

I'm also struck by the celebration of destruction and the explicit rejection of the aspiration of building anything in place of what is destroyed. Somalia + Libya are reminders of what happens when a government is toppled without something being allowed to gro win its place.

Imagine a failed state of 90 million people in the heart of the Middle East, in striking distance of the Strait of Hormuz. Is that a recipe for global prosperity and security?

Today, India’s Modi, in a call w/Iran’s President, “condemned attacks on critical infrastructure.” This is rare sharp (albeit indirect) criticism of US/Israeli actions in the war. An indication of just how serious a threat these mil ops pose to India’s economic/energy interests.

Pakistan reportedly may host US-Iran talks later this week. Islamabad has been pitching itself as a mediator in recent days, and the USG praised Pakistan last year for its willingness to play an Iran mediation role.

Michael Kugelman (@michaelkugelman) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Pakistan is far from being an unlikely US-Iran mediator. Many high-level Pak-Iran meetings over last year. The US admin very fond of Pak. Trump has said Munir knows Iran better than most. Also worth noting that Pakistan represents Iran’s diplomatic interests in the US.

And for all the talk of the possibility of Pakistan invoking its pact with the Saudis…Pakistan, being located right on the war’s doorstep, clearly would prefer to take steps meant to help end the war, and not get dragged into it.
