Today marks the 75th anniversary of when we lost 12 smokejumpers and a local fire guard on the #MannGulch Fire in Montana. We continue to honor these individuals & commit to learning and implementing safety measures in hopes similar events never occur again. #NeverForgotten

More than 29,600 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires, including 23 complex and 3 Type 1 incident management teams, 635 crews, 1,772 engines, 174 helicopters, and six Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems, or MAFFS.

NOAA indicates a critical fire risk in parts of the PNW, especially along the Cascades in OR and WA. Scattered-severe t-storms with strong winds and hail are expected. Dry conditions and lightning could trigger new ignitions and spread existing fires. Stay alert and prepared!

The PNW experienced numerous lightning strikes this weekend, sparking new wildfires, adding to the region's high fire activity. Some holdover fires from these strikes may continue to pose a risk, especially with dry conditions and gusty winds.

Something I learned working on incident management teams that has a larger application: Training and encouraging your replacement is the most important part of the job and hoarding info/authority is antithetical to the mission.

In addition to the usual complaints related to aging, older me cannot handle the smoke like younger me once did. Might be time to start looking for a less smoky place to live.
