A Thread FOOTBALL REFEREES 1 The pandemic has taught us a few things to be mindful of. One of the biggest takeaways is flexibility. Be that flexible working, flexible schooling or flexible thinking.

Now the season has kicked off it is not easy for his parents to take him everywhere when they want to watch their daughter play. So I suggested he could referee games at my son's #grassrootsfootball club.

This means he always gets a lift there and back. It means his parents can watch their daughter play. It also gives him a safe space to learn and grow and make mistakes. Sounds good right? Not according to SOUTHEND AND DISTRICT JUNIOR LEAGUE.

It isn't their policy. Clubs can't appoint their own referees. Now I understand, there's potentially a bias involved but we are talking about a 15 year old boy. Not a dad or mum who thinks their team is the next Man City.

Surely there is flexibility. Why not make an amendment to the policy. Younger referees aged 15 - 17 can be appointed to a 'home club'. That's all we are asking. Flexibility to make his experience as a new referee a positive one. Retweet if you agree. #grassrootsfootball
