It's been exactly 20 years since my first day of internship As I reflect on my disproportionate aging since then (gray hairs >>> wisdom), here are my 10 unsolicited recommendations for any colleague embarking on residency THE "ATTENDING ADVICE YOU DIDN'T ASK FOR" THREAD ...

As Robert Spitzer (chair of DSM-III) once told me about DSM-5: they created it to make money. As everyone would need to buy the new edition, the publisher, American Psychiatric Association, would make millions a year selling it. The same for DSM-6... New edition, familiar hustle.

You will fail. That does not make you a failure. You will disappoint people. That does not make you a disappointment. You will feel incompetent not knowing an answer. That does not make you incompetent. Don’t fall for the trap of defining yourself by a single moment.

I hear this often! Some physicians do work in these roles for various reasons. I applied and interviewed at multiple grocery stores not too long ago. So in case these fantasies are realities for some- it does make sense. You are not alone. Thank you for sharing, Dimitrios Tsatiris MD!

My lab’s 5-year NIH R01 grant, awarded to study gene therapy for hearing loss, was abruptly terminated. I want to share how this action has been incredibly harmful and disruptive, not just to my lab, but to the scientific process itself. 1/15

Was called by my apartment's leasing agent this AM and thought I was in trouble...😂turns out, Reese was selected to be pet of the month! 🥳 Which is much more fun than the former.

Who else gets extraordinary anxiety before their birthday? Mine is July 19th. Been having anxiety leading up to it since I was 29 and lost people close to me at that age. My 30th birthday was pure panic and couldn't sleep the night before...it seems to have increased each year.

I'm in a couple's therapy course and it's helped me gain insight into some reasons why I've been perpetually single. 😂 Thinking maybe we should all take marriage and family therapy courses. Very practical!

The job of your brain is not to make you happy. From an evolutionary point, its job is to help you survive. It does this by looking for what can go wrong and keeping you dissatisfied so you constantly strive for more. Happiness does not come naturally. It takes practice.

Shopping for business clothes that I need but don't want means actually buying dog toys that Reese wants yet doesn't need. 😆 No regrets. 😜

The "never enough" spiral can sure sneak up on you... no matter how much you've worked on healing from toxic shame and attempting to detach from perfectionism.
