As Halloween is approaching, Newberry Corn Field is taking precautions as large crowds come through the haunted maze. WUFT News

The Maze is peaceful during the day, but at night is when the most people come. Workers must wear haunted masks that cover their entire faces and the scares are not as extreme with workers staying at least 6 feet away because of COVID-19. WUFT News

The business now sells less tickets during the day since Newberry had to close the kids play area that would usually bring in several families. WUFT News

Thanksgiving looks a little different this year as families quarantine in their homes. Covid-19 has made it more difficult to be surrounded by anyone but immediate family members.

Home cooking remains the same but grandparents and family members who could not travel connected on zoom this year. This is the second online holiday since Easter in April.

Flying around the holidays started to feel normal again as flights out of Gainesville Regional Airport were booked. American Airlines is expecting more full flights as Christmas approaches.

On an American Airlines flight, guests are required to wear a mask and drinking or eating is discouraged. Service carts will only come if called but keeping a mask on is the best way to prevent spreading Covid-19.

Flights connecting to larger airports are more crowded than Gainesville Regional Airport as seen in Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Social distancing is encouraged but every seat can be filled on an airplane.

American Sign Language professor Zulma Santiago has faced an uncommon struggle during the pandemic. Being deaf, it is harder for her to communicate with anyone wearing a mask because facial expressions and being able to read someone’s lips are both taken away.

A minor solution for the deaf community would be to require workers, like at University of Florida restaurants, to wear a clear mask that gives people in the deaf community a chance to read lips and mend the communication barrier caused by Covid-19 restrictions.

UF American Sign Language professor Zulma Santiago says that her biggest struggle in being deaf was the transition to teaching online. Students often have to text in the chat box, email or write on papers to overcome the language barrier that is usually avoided in person.
