We've all heard about corruption of national governments. However, quantifying corruption of 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 governments is incredibly tough. A new dataset provides data on local government corruption for 1,473 regions in 178 countries from 1995-2022:

We are happy to release the first results of a RCT of a US program that provided $1,000/month unconditionally for 3 years to 1,000 individuals in the treatment group, with a group of 2,000 people receiving $50/month serving as the control. These are sizable transfers. 1/ 🧵

I've posted a review article on deep learning for economists arxiv.org/pdf/2407.15339. The DL literature is vast, and I initially found it pretty daunting to find the parts of it that are most relevant to economic applications. I hope people will find this useful! #econtwitter

NEW PAPER: Your budget allows you to run an experiment in 6 sites, e.g. villages in a low-income country. The necessary infrastructure exists in about 300 sites. How to maximize gain of transferrable knowledge?

We owe it to the kid, a loved one, who's half-Japanese half-Chinese. I'm sad, speechless, and beyond anger. As intellectuals, esp. those who claim to study politics, it's our duty to speak the truth, in our way, whenever we can. Otherwise, what's the point?

Simple presentation advice to JMCs: 1) Show the current slide # but hide the total # of slides 2) Gradually uncover parts of the slide but don't use semi-transparent text for what's about to be shown Audiences should focus on the current moment, rather than worrying what's next

I am thinking of making my DiD materials that I used for teaching in the last 5 years available. I am hoping these would find begineers in need of a step-by-step opinionated walkthrough of several developments Let’s see if I find the energy to do this! #EconTwitter

Happy to be featured on VoxDev! My paper shows that subnational government competition suppresses trade across competing jurisdictions and fragments domestic markets.

China’s bureaucratic promotion system unintentionally incentivises local leaders to restrict trade and underinvest in cross-jurisdictional infrastructure with provincial peers, fragmenting the world’s largest domestic markets and undermining long-term growth.

This interesting paper shows the downside of China’s competitive model. Competition among local government officials motivates them to develop their local economies. But it can also lead them to limit trade and cooperation with their neighbors—within the same province.

That’s exactly what we find in our paper! Firms that adopt GenAI reduce the number of junior employees, and this effect operates entirely through a decline in hiring rather than increased separations. Link to draft: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
