It’s official! Barham Salih, former President of Iraq, has been elected as the next High Commissioner for Refugees. Having been a refugee himself, he brings powerful lived experience to lead UNHCR. We’re excited to welcome him soon. 💙

In Adre, at the Chadian border, I met Sudanese refugees who just fled the horrors of war at home. UNHCR is playing a crucial role here, ensuring people find safety and protection, shelter and other vital assistance. But it is far from enough, given the scale of this calamity.

Protection remains at the heart of UNHCR’s work in Lebanon. In Zaatari refugee camp, High Commissioner Barham Salih listened to families who have endured 14 years of displacement yet still speak of home with hope. We must stand with refugees and host communities, so every return is truly voluntary, safe and dignified.
