Lesser Ury was one of the first artists in Germany to take modern city life as a topic for art. In this pastel (c1920) he depicts the mood of the fast developing metropolis of Berlin in an everyday snapshot featuring the bustle of daily life on Alexanderplatz.

David Bomberg visited Cyprus in 1946 and was drawn in particular to the ruined fortress perched on top of Mount St Hilarion. This work, painted at sunset, depicts the rocky outcrops of the mountain's peak dropping away to the valley floor and the Mediterranean sea beyond.
