Could this be the compromise? As an educator of course I know learning is important, but safety keeps me up at night. If we did all instruction virtually, and treated schools and other buildings as spaces for children to safely log in from, it might just work.

WOW. Not only is this a huge piece of history that isn't being taught, but it also completely reframes the concept of the U.S.-Mexico border and asylum across it.

It's sad to me that people need to hear this, but for those that do: Teachers are not "going back to work" when in-person and hybrid models resume. Teachers have been working the entire time we've been in a pandemic. #ThankATeacher #ValueTeachers #RespectTeachers

A1: I always refer to the iceberg model of culture. More than just visible aspacts of "food, flags, and festivals," culture is about deep questions like how we view ourselves and interact with others. images.app.goo.gl/FyTQP8fAF4T5rU… #mpcschat

Q2: When we recognize our own culture and positionality, we acknowledge that there is no such thing as a cultural default. Students need both mirrors and windows to see themselves and a variety of members of other cultures in books and other materials they learn with #mpcschat

A3: As educators we can take time to do research ourselves to gain a deeper understanding of cultures not only of our students but related to content we are teaching. In the primary grades we communicate a LOT through images so our choice of images is important! #mpcschat

The deadly attacks on Asian women in Atlanta last night were a tragedy. I'm disappointed that it took me until 9:45 the next day to learn about this despite looking at social media and listening to NPR this morning.

Thank you for saying this! I usually feel that I'd rather put my effort into making another great lesson than putting my last one on Twitter, and I struggle with the line between performative and productive sharing.

Read if you want to know what it's like to teach English learners in the primary grades during a pandemic. I would add, however, that despite very real concerns there is still joy and connection!

I was inspired by marsxmasr to write a poem! I used Helal's format, The Arabic, to explore right-to-left writing. More importantly, she challenged me to express my admiration for multilingual learners. jenniferlarance.wixsite.com/whereismrslara…

We spend 50% more hours in school than Finland. And they get 15 mins of recess every hour. They have NO standardized tests except for PISA in HS and they outperform us every time. If we can’t give students more movement, recess, and play time then we don’t understand education.

What would you add? The Powerful Gift of #Bilingualism/#Multilingualism Some emergent bilinguals feel embarrassed or less than for acquiring a new language. BUT they shouldn’t. They are our future global leaders! Let them know how special & important this human capital is.
