If you haven’t tried the new #kahoot modes yet, check them out while they’re free! My French 9 class stayed after the bell to finish a very close game 🤩

A great example of why authentic resources and representation matter - a French 9 student told me today that her favorite French song is "Et Bam" by Mentissa because it shows a woman of color who is trying to balance personal goals and a love of family. youtu.be/y0dbfkpWkUo

Working with multilingual students requires some shifts in our frameworks. This open-access resource explains what multilingualism can look like and how to support reading comprehension for those students. link.springer.com/chapter/10.100… #sd36learn

A good example of student awareness of translanguaging in action. This was an introductory listening exercise for French 10, and this student reflected on her ability to successfully use English, Hindi and French to think through it. #fle #sd36learn

Brainstorming how to describe ourselves in a multicultural community. Students were able to pronounce the words more and more easily as they noticed word endings. #fle #sd36learn

"I don't have enough words." Shifting vocabulary instruction from memorizing to supporting. ignitelanguage.com/2024/02/23/i-d… With gratitude to Tanya S. Wright, Amplify, and Landmark School for contributing to my learning shared here.

This is vocabulary & knowledge building in action. This is what Core French 10 students heard & recognized when hearing the first page of an article read out loud. They discussed with a partner, but used no other resources. Only 2 words needed explanation after this! #sd36learn

A multilingual student helped me prepare my lesson for tomorrow. The song we'll look at in class includes lyrics in Arabic. Thankfully, his fluency helped correct the translation I was working from to be faithful to the original ideas. Multilingualism is a strength. #sd36learn

Millions of kids take reading tests with no idea of what they will cover.  This treats reading comp as an isolated skill apart from background knowledge. Hugh Catts has pointed out that this isn’t aligned with the research on how kids learn to read. the74million.org/article/louisi…

My final listening assessment for Core French 10 is different this year. Students create questions based on songs they chose, using criteria to connect sounds of words to their knowledge of grammar, spelling, & context. They're singing while they write ❤️ #sd36learn #langchat
