Every wildfire starts with an ignition – downed powerlines, lightning, arson – and we can do a lot to reduce these. But in California the number of fires has dropped while the area burned has doubled. What has changed is conditions, not ignitions:

"People always ask me, 'After covering climate change for so long, why aren’t you living in your basement drinking a bottle of bourbon and scrolling on the wall with crayons about the lost future for your children?'” cnn.com/2025/01/18/cli…

“The biggest lesson that we need to learn is that we are just plain not prepared for the climate that we have created. Our world is not built for the climate that we live in, and the biggest change is going to require acknowledging that fact.” cnn.com/2025/01/18/cli…

Trump saying he’s going to bring back the Keystone XL pipeline is like a guy at Blockbuster saying he’s going to bring back VHS tapes. That pipeline was a boondoggle 15 years ago and it’s even dumber today.

One astonishing thing about the number of tech billionaires donating $1m to the Trump inauguration is that, for instance, Zuckerberg’s donation is the equivalent of someone worth $200 million donating $1,000.

Trump quits Paris climate agreement and pushes fossil fuels. Musk says the climate crisis is no big deal. I wonder what the owner of this melted Tesla in LA thinks?

Trump's Paris withdrawal sums up this moment: it will damage the planet while rewarding fossil fuel interests who could care less about a MAGA movement that sees climate scientists as more "elite" than oil executives. Meanwhile, China will lead (and profit) on clean energy

After fossil fuel-fired hurricanes 🌀 Helene and 🌀 Milton ransack Southeast US & massive 🔥 🔥 burn down parts of LA, people cheer a fossil fuel president #Trump. Just surreal. 🤯

Here is my summary of the environmental, energy and climate provisions in the executive orders that Trump issued last night. bit.ly/4h1uux3 Bottom line: Doing everything they can to increase both supply of and demand for fossil fuels.

One good thing about Trump speculating about taking Greenland is that it might inspire more people to think about what's happening in the icy north and to pick up Neil Shubin's ENDS OF THE EARTH. I can't recommend highly enough. It's a cosmic adventure story written in ice.

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.

Americans think that because they have AI on their phones and overnight Amazon that they have Mother Nature whipped. Not the case, writes Jeff Goodell. If the Palisades fire proves anything, it's that the Earth (and us on it) are in serious trouble. 🔗 rollingstone.com/culture/cultur…
