I don’t really teach math. I teach humans how to find themselves and their role in the world. Yes, we gather in a math classroom and there are lots of numbers involved. But what I do is so much more then numbers, variables, and data. #teachbetter #masterychat #mathchat

It can be hard to quantify effective teaching. Test scores are certainly not an adequate bottom line. But one thing I know for sure is this: Effective teaching is more likely to result from educators who are continually learning and improving their craft.

I was talking with my daughter this evening about what would be a good book to write. She said I should title it: “How to Make Kids Smile.” This was a simple concept, yet very profound - and it took my breath away. When we can help our kids smile...we’re doing something right.

Spring break in a few hours!!!! But remember - that student today who seems especially "off" may be dreading a week at home away from the safety and routine of school ...be gentle.

Another school shooting ... how can I respond the next day? Makes me want to be a little kinder, a little gentler, and a little more understanding. I can't know the demons my students face, but maybe a kind act can make its way into the hurt and fear and produce change.
