Today, the government announced plans to change benefits and employment support. Some of the changes providing more support for people to be able to work are welcome, but risk being undermined by plans to cut financial support for people with disabilities.

“It feels like the announcements today will build more barriers for people who need help, and in some sense is giving with one hand and taking with the other.

“Lots of people I speak to use Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to travel around, and support themselves for daily living. There are positives in helping people get back to work but the changes to PIP are worrying.

“For me too, I use PIP for that and cutting it would dramatically change my life. We shouldn't be taking away people's independence. Cutting PIP in the future will impact people who are homeless with disabilities, and their ability to get to services and live the life they want.

“I want the Government to know that if someone is homeless and living in temporary accommodation, fighting to get a property, and often suffering from anxiety&depression, and you're getting less help financially, it only makes things worse.”

🚨No, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. 🤡 As of today (1 April), housing benefits are frozen until 2026. This is pushing people deeper into poverty and towards homelessness.

A new report from Crisis supported by Health Equals and including analysis with @zoopla shows: Just 2.7% of private rents are affordable for people in Britain needing housing benefits. This means for many people who are homeless, a more permanent home is out of reach.

This means more people will be forced to sleep rough or stay in poor-quality temporary accommodation. This can have devastating effects on their health.
